A Connected Android Pocket Tablet

Connected Android
Android is the application framework developed by Google for connected mobile devices, coming stock with a full pack of connected apps, such as a web browser and email application. The five home screens of the Android user interface allow for advanced personalization: icons can be placed, moved or erased with just a flick of a finger.

ARCHOS products also feature an accelerometer and a graphical accelerator (3D OpenGL ES 2.0) to exploit the Android 3D capabilities such as live wallpapers, transition effects and 3D games.

In addition, since the ARCHOS 28 is Wi-Fi enabled, it'll automatically download the latest firmware and OS updates.

Brilliant 2.8-Inch Touchscreen
The ARCHOS 28 boasts a 2.8-inch, QVGA (320 x 240 pixel) resolution touch screen that makes navigation and application use a breeze.

Fantastic Multimedia Player
ARCHOS 28 features include a new music application, adding 3D cover animation support and the ability to add a mini music widget to the home screen (in order to control your music at any time). Also, because it is an ARCHOS music player, the ARCHOS 28 IT is able to play all the music formats you'll need to keep your digital music experience as large as it can be.

Who doesn't have a few minutes to watch a little video? The ARCHOS 28 IT answers this need with its video player application that supports all the popular video formats. Or, if you're more into personal photos, why not open the Gallery application and show your latest vacation to your friends or even share them via a wireless network.

Basically, you won't find too may media players with a list like this:
  • Video Support: MPEG-4, H.264, WMV/VC1, Motion JPEG, MPEG 2 codecs with AVI, MP4, MOV, 3GP, MPG, PS, TS, VOB, MKV, FLV, RM, RMVB, ASF, and WMV extensions

My New Home Remote!
By Michael Curran (Pine Ridge, SD)

I have became a huge fan of the android operating system. I wasn't interested in this device until I started looking around for a cheap home theather remote. I currently use a computer and run XBMC. On my phone I used an android app to control my TV and its functions. I found it worked great however I grew tired of answering the phone and not having an easy way of pausing my show. So I looked into archos units. I ended up getting the 28 for the following reasons...

I wanted a simple android device that I can turn into a remote to control my TV. I got the cheapest device knowing that is DOES NOT have the following features. No camera, no bluetooth, no cap. touch screen, no speaker, no out of box google market. While I did install the google market long enough to get some apps install on my device I removed the market quickly. I wanted a secure device that anyone could pick up and use. I didn't want to worry about strange app purchases or people reading my email, facebook if I had the device laying around. While it was easy to get the google market installed and my apps downloaded. I was just as easy to remove the google apps.

As a device I am used to my Droid running 2.2. I will admit the screen lack a lot on the device for anyone wanting it to use for movies. While I didn't want the device for that the Screen works great for using it as a remote.

I was really impressed with a few features that archos includes on all its android devices. uPNP support and for $15 AC3 support. My little 28 didn't have any problems finding my XBMC box and plays the movies over the wifi no problems! I was really impressed with archos I had no tweaking setups it just worked. I can't even find anything that simple on my Droid! That feature alone makes me want to upgrade to a higher screen to have a portable TV in the house! It even supports window shares! Really impressive to use as a portable movie player in the house.

While I don't beleive you should ever expect a lot from this device if you are using it outside the home. I would only use it to listen to music. There is a lot of potental with this device. Don't expect a clear screen or a glass top touch screen. However expect a device that might just surprise you. I would suggest if you want speakers or a camera to look at their larger screens. The 28 still works as a good mp3 player and as a home automation remote!
