Apple ATI Radeon 5770 1 GB ZML MC742ZM/A
by Apple
Like several of the other reviewers, I needed to search carefully on the internet to verify that this Radeon 5770 video card would work in my 2006 Mac Pro (1,1). Apple has not "certified" it for use in this model. However, it worked perfectly for me, right out of the box, and took less than 10 minutes to install. It installed very easily; anyone who is comfortable opening up the side of their Mac Pro should find it a snap to install. For me this replaced a Radeon 1900GT card.
One of the first things I noticed was that the card is much quieter and generates much less heat, both good advantages. I can't say I notice much obvious performance improvement, but I'm not a gamer and I don't need absolutely top performance in a video card.
I'm using the DVI output with the card. NOTE: Various sites say that the Mini Display ports on this card will only work in a 2006 Mac Pro if it is running at least version 10.6.4 of the Mac OS. The DVI port will work no matter what OS version is used.
For those who are tempted to buy the cheaper non-Mac version of this card, be forewarned that the non-Mac version will NOT work in a Mac right out of the box. It CAN be made to work in a Mac by flashing the ROM of the non-Mac version, but that isn't for the faint of heart!
Installation was a breeze - no tools needed.
This took me a little under 10 minutes.

- Open side panel,
- Remove the little plate (far right) that locks the back brackets,
- Remove old card,
- Insert power cable into the designated power connectors (upper left corner on your mainboard),
- Slide in the card (this might require a little bit of patience and fiddling),
- Connect the power cable to your new videocard,
- Place the plate (removed in step 2) that locks the back brackets,
- Place side panel back,...
- Boot Mac - and you're done, no drivers or setup needed, works out of the box (note: I'm running Snow Leopard 10.6.7).
This took me a little under 10 minutes.
