Armored Droids!

I love the Otterbox products. There is just something liberating when one these armored cases are gracing my expensive electronics. The Razor Maxx fits very snugly into this enclosure's armored inner core. It's the most precise fit I've gotten from an otterbox and it is sure to deal well with fumble fingered drops. The outer silicone wraps nicely around the inner lining and completes the shock-packaging. Otter boxes are by necessity a bit large. The size is a function of the degree of protection provided. There are a number of port covers that are open-able to provide access to earphone, charger, HDMI ports. One issue I'm struggling with is that the lap dock adapter doesn't seem to fit down into the top flap. I'm trying to find an adapter that might correct the problem. The charge cable fits fine. The Motorola Car-Dock does not accommodate even Motorola's cases, and you will need to look for a slip-grip if you want this mounted on the window. There are so many sketchy sellers selling phone chargers out there, that it can be a bit scary. The problem is that if the charger is poorly made, the output of the charger can be out of spec and can, in some cases, fry the phone you connect to it.

For that reason, when it comes to phone chargers, you should stick to name brands. (They are all made in China, but the name brand ones are usually subject to stricter QA).

When I found this charger on Amazon, SOLD BY AMAZON, I jumped on it. It's a MICRO USB car charger, made for Motorola and sold under the Motorola name, in retail packaging. The rated output is 4.75-5.25V and 950mA.

This charger should work fine with most any phone that uses the MICRO USB connector. The key number to pay attention to is the second one, the rated amperage. This is the MAXIMUM amount of current that the phone can request from the charger. A typical USB port on a PC provides as little as 100mA, and few provide more than 500mA. So this charger should charge your phone faster than when it's connected to a PC. A few phones out now can use up to 1000mA. But that just means they CAN use that amount. If 950mA is provided, they'll still charge, just a bit more slowly.

Note that the amperage (second number) merely tells you how much the charger CAN supply, if requested. The phone itself is responsible for asking for the current. That is to say, if this charger can provide 950mA, but your phone can only use 300mA--no problem. Your phone asks for 300mA and the charger provides all of what is requested. If, on the other hand, your phone can use 1000mA, this charger will provide all it can, which is 950mA--a wee bit less than the max asked for. That's also not a problem; it just means your phone will charge a little bit (not much in this case) more slowly. The rated voltage for this charger is presented in a range of 4.75-5.25V. The "ideal" voltage for a USB charger of any type if 5V. And most chargers for home use are rated right at 5V. But car chargers work in a noisier environment and thus you have the range. This is where a cheapo charger can really do damage, as some of them are poorly regulated and can provide voltages that are WAY out of spec. Again, when you can get a name brand charger from a seller you can trust (Amazon) for such a reasonable price, it's very foolish to consider the cheapo no-names.

This is an excellent quality name brand travel micro USB charger at a price that beats the no-name junk from third party sellers. What's not to like?

Just got this phone and paid 680 USD. Prices are falling, so if you wait a bit it should be cheaper. The one I got appears to be an "import" from the UK. Only complaint...not so good single speaker on the back which sounds plastic-like similar those cheap clear-membrane loudspeakers, but headphones are better. Of course, it takes the micro SIM, so I had to cut my old one to "fit" into the smaller slot - I did not want to change my number and micro SIMs are a bit harder to find in China. Overall, a good phone, thin and light to carry, and wide screen (I can't imagine what the Galaxy S2 LTE HD at 4.65 feels like - huge maybe in comparison). Video in low light is good, but nothing to write home about. So you will pay a premium for a skinny mobile... Cheers!

I have a limited amount of cargo space in my bag. I seriously do not want to waste money and real estate on 15 different gadgets. 


Criteria: 

PHONE. I want to be heard and to be able to hear. Droid: Brilliantly does this. anyplace anytime, anywhere. I have not had a call dropped or lost, but I have had a little issue with face dialing. 


GOOGLE VOICE: Transcribes all my voice mail and sends it to my phone. from the house phone, from the cell phone, all redirects to one location. SWEET. and for the hearing impaired, I can read it and hear it at the same time. it is fairly accurate with people that articulate well, it is hit and miss for people that talk like they have a mouthful of cheerios. 


RINGTONES: any song I have on any album I can rip to MP3 and make it a ringtone. a FULL SONG ringtone, not just 20 seconds that repeats. very nice. 

CONTACT LIST: I want to manage this on my computer with a NORMAL keyboard and access to GOOGLE, FACEBOOK Photos, and other resources, DROID: Brilliantly does this. 


TEXTING: I have to have a NORMAL QWERTY keyboard in landscape mode to type with two thumbs. Droid does this Brilliantly. Each texting conversation is kept in a running dialog with that person. so I know what question was answered when I get a text a day or two later, without wondering what they are talking about because I forgot what I said last. this is BRILLIANT! 


CALENDAR: 
EACH family member uses google calendar and this is without a doubt the only way that we can maintain our complicated calendar with color coded blocks of time for scheduling. Cub Scouts, Business Meetings, Chess club, Dr Appointments, birthday party's, remove the day planner from my wallet and reduce the weight by a few pounds is WONDERFUL! Everything sync's automatically, instantly giving me a two in one device. 

DIGITAL PHOTO ALBUM: this is a squealing delight, the picture quality and size is fantastic, and I am a pro-photographer so I am pretty picky on picture quality. I am very happy to have three in one purpose device. 


MP3 Player: with 5 kids, I rarely have a moment alone but yes, I have had time to sneak on the ear phones and listen to a song or two and it was very nice to have my own music instead of whatever white noise is going on around me. that gives me four in one devices. 


GPS: when my husband got turn by turn with his blackberry a year ago I was so jealous, but the blackberry device is just vile in my opinion. He has the pearl and I despise the flaky little keyboard. I simply knew that there had to be something out there and I was so tempted to get the separate GPS but who need yet another device? GOOGLE MAPS is fantastic. voice search is sweet, the only drawback is the horrible 'digitized voice and poor pronunciation of words like creek and other simple street names in my neighborhood. overall better than the alternative. Happily I have now five in one devices.

LATITUDES: this is where we add the marzipan to the cake, I NEED to know where my kids are. I am one of those parents that simply need to know. If I could put a chip in their ankles at the vet legally, I would do it. With Latitudes, I can see where they are on the map anywhere without them having to do anything. They only share with me so I know that they are not 'at risk' but when you have a young adult daughter driving 2000 miles cross country alone, it is a frantic feeling when they do not call to check in. Latitudes works locally as well, if your 10 year old takes their phone and goes into an area that is out of the zone, you get an alert. I know without being strapped down to a computer all day, I can leave the house, but not leave my peace of mind. Six in one devices enough? 


SHOPPING: yes, I am watching every penny. If I am shopping and it is a 'good deal' I want to know that it is really a good deal. there is a bar code reader, SERIOUSLY. a bar code reader that will search Amazon and give me a price IMMEDIATELY. and I can decide to buy there where I am or with One-Click, order it from Amazon. I have had it on my doorstep the next day after going through this process. THIS IS INVALUABLE. seven in one devices. 


CAMERA. ehn not even close. I am way too picky when it comes to picture quality. They definitely dropped the ball on this one. I still have my Lumix DMC-LX3 in my purse and have to painstakingly upload to a computer and then to the blog for this but eventually it will get better. the mpg white balance is way too warm and I was not at all pleased with this. they need to go back to the drawing board and actually get some good optics. Same quality as the Alias 3 megapixel - BIG MINUS on this one. 

BONUS: 
Weather channel: I have 5 kids in 4 cities, I need to know. 
Facebook: always connected, wheee cool. this is a fun and nice little app, not as easy to navigate as a computer, but good enough. 
Twitter: fun. 
Gmail: Oh definitely invaluable. 
Mozilla: reading the newspaper, this is just way way too much fun. I am starting to wonder what I need a family for with all the fun that this has. 
Games: Soduku, word search, chess, but seriously, who has time with all the other features like Facebook newsfeed? 


a negative: the fail would be no java yet. it is expected in a couple of months so many web pages in the browser do not work since we are a java based experience, I am waiting patiently. 


overall I love my droid more than my kids, more than my husband, more than my Nikon D300. It is my full function voice recognition turn by turn GPS, it is my full function mp3 player. it is my fantastic digital photo album, it remembers and keeps a running stream of my text's in a 'chat' format. it is my wifi anywhere I want to go browser / email / facebook / news/ weather / on demand connection. and I hear that it is a pretty nifty phone too.

I would not describe myself as "technically savvy," and I'm finding Motorola Photon very easy to use and reliable. I tried the Motorola EXPRT for three weeks and went through three phones before giving up. It was with the EXPRT that I had the problems described here: not being able to hear or be heard on incoming calls and the phone would reboot when I tried to call the caller back. I'm not having this problem with the Photon and am, in fact, very happy with the quality of the phone's sound and reception. I've also been receiving consistent four and five bar reception on my Photon, and I have traveled with this phone experiencing similar results. I've been a Sprint customer for over ten years, and my problem with the EXPRT was the first issue I have had with any of their devices or reception. The Sprint reps were more than courteous when I received my two replacement EXPRTs and changed to the Photon. I have no complaints with their handling of my problems. 

1. Call quality: The Photon has amazing call quality. Voices are loud, sharp and clear, and people on the other end report no noise or garbled speech. My Evo sounded like a toy compared to the Photon. A note on call quality: some people reported a "silent call" bug where they would connect a call but hear nothing, and this was admittedly a problem for a small number of users. However, Sprint recently released an update that seems to have fixed this issue for the majority of those suffering from it (for the record, I never did). 


2. Battery life: I got good at managing my Evo's battery and could go a whole day with moderate use. I don't really worry about that with the Photon, however. Aside from some minor adjustments to app settings, I have done very little battery tweaking and it easily lasts all day with moderate to heavy use. It also has some basic battery management settings (reducing load at night is the default), something the Evo lacked. 

3. The screen: The screen has great brightness and clarity, with good color. It also has a functioning auto-brightness function, something I gave up on using on my Evo after one week. The Photon's screen is easily visible under the direct summer sun, something my Evo struggled with. It's also more energy efficient than the Evo, helping reduce battery drain with equivalent brightness. HOWEVER: the screen is what's known as a PenTile screen, a different display technology than what many people are used to. This results in a pixelated appearance if you're not used to it. When I first looked at the Photon, I thought the screen looked terrible. After playing with some other phones and taking a second look at the Photon, however, I didn't notice it as much. Now, after two weeks, I only notice it if I look for it. When I powered my Evo up to wipe it in preparation for selling it, I was struck by how dull and muddy a screen I once considered gorgeous looked to my eyes. I recommend looking at the Photon in person before you buy it, and do it more than once if you notice the pixelation from the start. 


4. Speed: It's fast. Everything seems faster than my Evo: boot up, browsing, launching apps, scrolling through screens, turning on the 4G antenna. Whatever I throw at it, the Photon handles. The few times it did lag was due to an app misbehaving, nothing a quick force close couldn't fix. 

5. Signal strength: it's hard to compare across phones without a cell signal strength app (which I have not bothered with), but the Photon seems more stable than my Evo. The only times I've lost a call was talking to another cell phone user, and it was their location that caused it. My Evo was pretty solid in this regard, so for the Photon to surpass it really impresses me. 


6. Build quality: the Photon is light but solid. It's comfortable to hold and the Gorilla Glass screen is not only durable but beautiful as well, with a very subtle taper where it meets the bezel. Note this does make a little gap that can attract pocket lint, but it's easy enough to blow out. My Evo was a joy to hold as well, but like many early adopters mine had minor cosmetic issues that I just don't see on the Photon. 

7. It's Android!: not a plus over the Evo, of course, but I wanted to point it out as it means the phone is incredibly customizable compared to other phone OSes. If you don't like Motorola's stock UI (and I'm not overly fond of it; HTC's Sense blows it out of the water), you can easily change or hide it and not worry about it at all. Don't like the widgets? Replace them! Don't like the launcher? Replace it! Want a different lock screen? Replace it! Some people forget that the stock UI of any Android phone is not what you have to use. 


8. Root: the Photon has been rooted and the bootloader unlocked, all within about two weeks of its launch. It will have good developer support.


Overall, I'm very pleased with the Photon. I do miss HTC Sense, but as I noted above it's easy to customize the UI to your liking. The Photon is everything I loved about the Evo, only better.

In general I think the Triumph is a good phone. The design is nice (looks like a Droid) and the logo is on the back, so when somebody is looking at your cellphone (maybe on a desk) does not think "he is on Virgin... this guy must be cheap", at least not right away. 
The phone attracts a lot of attention and when I tell them I am on a prepaid (and that the prepaid is $25 a month) people does not believe it. 


The PROCESSOR is snappy. It works fine. I've played Angry Bird (and many other games) with no issue at all, scrolling and animations are smooth. 
The DISPLAY is very nice (but not superb, due to not excellent saturation of colors and a sort of blue tint), indoor. Outdoor, at least now in the summer, is hardly readable. The auto brightness takes a while (I would say a good minute) to adjust the brightness and most of the time I have to do that manually using a shortcut on the desktop. 
Good SPEAKER (loud) good mic. I think it has a noise reduction feature but is just a guess. It does not come with headphones, strangely. 
Good CAMERA that takes nice pictures, however it has a small lag. You hit the button but the image is recorded a second later. When timing is crucial you will find this very annoying. iPhone did not have this problem and photos were great. 
Even if I've read many critiques about the LED flash, I find it working fine. 

BATTERY life is 16 full hours. I unplug it at 7AM and I always get to 11PM. I've recently installed Juice Defender Beta (free on the market) and it helps to extend it to 24 hours. Anyway you have to charge it everyday. iPhone lasted a bit longer but same thing, I had to charge it everyday. Battery cover tends to get loose easily. When it does the battery hangs in there, it does not fall off, but it is annoying to have to put it back. I don't know why, maybe I played with it too much and I loosened it up. I'm tempted to put a little piece of tape but I'm still not at that point. 


The Android operative system is nice. It integrates very well with Gmail and all the other google services (Calendars, You Tube, Maps), as expected. However I don't find it as polished as iOS is. Sometime is not intuitive at all. You will soon realize that the menu button (the one on the bottom left with four little squares) is your best friend. Most of the options are hidden behind that shortcut. 

About Virgin Service. I am lucky, I live in an area where I always have good coverage and the 3G is pretty fast, even if I don't use it that much. The plan is cheap and allows me to save $55 a month (compared to a $49 iPhone contract, that with SMS, internet and taxes ended up being $80). Beside the saving what persuaded me to switch to a prepaid is the no-commitment. I could not stand those 2-year contracts any longer. I think I will never go back to a contract, as the prepaid are getting strong. Not only Virgin but also other, for example if you want a 4G phone look into Tmobile. 


In conclusion it is a good phone, not an iPhone or the high level HTC, but definitely a nice phone. I save $55 a month, that's a lot. Make sure Virgin has good coverage in your area. I bought a cheap virgin phone and I used it for a couple of weeks, taking it with me everywhere everywhere and trying to make some test phone calls. When I was sure that the coverage was ok, I ported my number.
