LCD Display Provides High-Definition Video Playback
Enjoy your downloads as they were meant to be seen with the GoGear Connect 3's high-definition touchscreen display. The 3.2-inch backlit LCD screen offers 480*320 resolution for crisp and clear videos. It can play up to 720p high definition videos. Compatibility with the most popular formats allows viewing of most pictures and video formats. To make navigation easy, the screen features a capacitive touch-sensitive screen and can be controlled with the lightest touch.

Enhanced Sound Quality for Music and Movies
To get the most out of your media, the GoGear Connect 3 boasts multiple audio processing technologies. Philips' FullSound technology restores sonic details to compressed MP3 music, delivering fuller bass, boosted voice, and instrument clarity to the music experience. Surround for movies analyzes each movie or video soundtrack to recreate a natural soundstage with sound elements that are individually and precisely localized. The result puts the listener right in the middle of the action for an immersive surround experience.

Sound Isolation Headphones Minimize Environmental Noise
The GoGear Connect 3 includes sound isolation in-ear headphones that let you hear greater music detail at a lower volume than is possible with normal headphones. Their acoustic design creates a seal between the ambient sound source and the ear canal, eliminating unwanted background noise while delivering sound directly to your ears. Even at a moderate volume setting, you can still discern music details without noise distractions from the environment. Interchangeable earcaps are available in three sizes to provide superior comfort and fit.

To easily manage and sync all of your media, the GoGear Connect 3 comes with Philips Songbird. Its intuitive and powerful music management features let you discover new artists and music styles directly in the program through media stores, services, and websites. Decent iPod Touch Alternative
By Michael McKee "mystic cowboy" (Port Townsend, WA United States)

With Apple selling so many iPod Touches, I'd think the options for Android equivalents would be larger. Well, Philips has entered the arena. If you are not a fan of Apple this is an adequate alternative.

When I opened the packaging, I was surprised at the size of the Connect. It's a bit over twice as thick as my iPod Touch and a bit longer. It seemed heavier but I weighed both of the devices and the Connect is 112 grams vs. 105 for the iPod Touch. That's probably not enough to truly tell by holding the two players. Call it a wash. The screen on this is 3.2 inches vs. the 3.5 of the Touch. That is noticeable. The Connect has an FM radio receiver built in, which works fine. The Touch doesn't. The big omission is cameras. The Connect doesn't have any, so no video conferencing or snapshots.

While the screen of the Connect is a bit smaller, it's bright and crisp. The Connect comes with a couple of demo movies. They look good. The screen is nicely sensitive to touch. I added my own MP4 movie by side loading and it played perfectly.

Android ran quickly. Apps started up fast. The screen changed orientation quickly. The keyboard is responsive. The Connect walked me through setting up Wi-Fi and connecting to Google services. Wi-Fi reception seems about the same as with the Touch, not spectacular, not terrible. The Connect has a lot of apps preloaded, including Songbird for music, Audible, Rhapsody, YouTube, Android Market and so on. Songbird is an adequate music player, though it lacks touch volume control. I had the same frustrating half hour with the connect to that as I experienced with my LG phone when trying to connect to the Android store. I got it done, but it isn't the seamless/painless experience that Apple delivers.

Unfortunately, like the iPod Touch, the Connect has the headset jack on the bottom. The micro-USB connect jack is there, too. Volume buttons are on the right. The stick out just enough to work with thin gloves on and are separated enough to handle the controls totally by touch without having to first orient whether my finger is on the up or down control. Excellent. The power button is on the right side, near the bottom. Not excellent. It's fits right where the pad beneath the thumb pushes when holding the Connect right handed. I turned the Connect off while holding it with my gloved hand. Poor ergonomics.

A micro-USB cable is included but, its only 12 inches long. I have one from my phone that works better. The include cable is just too short. Charging the Connect from a wall socket charger (not included-I use my Kindle charger) caused the device to hang from the wall. Connecting it to a laptop requires setting the Connect on the computer. The earphones also have a short cord. It will reach a shirt pocket but you won't get the Connect in a jacket hand warmer pocket, let alone your pants. One saving grace is that the in-ear phones are much more comfortable that the awful Apple version, though the look much cheaper than Apple's. Sound quality seems equally mediocre.

Continuing with fit and finish, this thing lacks the polish of the iPod Touch. The Connect is well enough constructed and seems solid, but it also looks cheaper than the touch. One advantage of using an iPod Touch is that there are many after market cases and holders available. You may have trouble finding one. Also the micro-USB connector works fine but won't sit in a dock, which all iPods, iPads and iPhones do. You'll need to get a double male cable to plug into external speakers or other devices. It works but isn't elegant. You can probably use Micro-USB connector to HDMI cable for TV viewing. You can with other Android players. As with many Android devices, you can add a Micro-SD card to increase the 8 GB of built in storage. That's a nice cost savings over the Touch.

The Connect works adequately as a PDA. Standard Android calendar and notes applications work. If you're on a budget, the Philips Connect is a decent alternative to the iPod Touch or the more expensive Samsung options.

Great iPhone docking station for the office
By Uwe Weinkauf (Mountain View, CA United States)
There are plenty iPhone docking stations out there and some are quite expensive... so why not add a radio to it and a device from which you can easily use the iPhone as well?

Here were the criteria I went by:

  1. Below $100
  2. Easy to use Radio docking station
  3. Slick design to put on my desk - not too big but yet suitiable to put on the desk with decent sound quality
  4. While listening to music from the iPhone the music should stop playing so that I can take a call AND after the call is over I want to get the music to be turned back on where it stopped
  5. Easy to use the iPhone from the docking station to dial numbers without breaking anything (most of the docking stations are a bit clunky when you try to put in the iPhone and then try to call people - you always have to use two hands to ensure the iPhone doesnt break anything on the docking connection).

After using it for a few weeks now all of the creteria are met in my opinion.

My biggest liking is actually how easy I can plug my iPhone into the radio docking station and can actually use the phone, look up contacts, do calls, etc with just one hand. Since it is right next to me I can simply use one hand to operate this little device. Unfortunatley (and I hope to see this feature in the future) the radio speakers are not turned on when someone calls... but I have the staion in arms length and the iPone speaeker do a good job or alternatlively I use the headset.

Also I use the iPhone as a wireless radio and with the iPhone in the docking station it becomes my wirelss radio so to speak. I have Pandora and other online radion service through the Apps provided by Apple. And in that instance the speakers do work!
And if I dont want to listen to internet or online radion stations I can easily switch with one button (the source button) to either an external MP3 Player, or the local FM radio stations.

The sound is quite descent but don't expect an super stereo and deep bass experience. But you can always attach bigger speakers later if you like.

So overall for $80 you get a stylish looking docking station for the iPhone and you can making calls from it, listening to online or local radion stations while charging your iPhone at the same time.

Philips PD7016/37 7-Inch Portable LCD Dual DVD Player

This is a very nicely designed product. Appearance of the case is top shelf. The video and audio quality is VERY good even on the 'remote' or slave display and the viewing angle is wide enough that it is easy to see from the middle seat.

Despite some of the Philips documentation mentioning to do some features with the 'remote control', the product does not come with one nor have I found one available to purchase as an accessory.

The product is fully featured and does all the things you would expect it to. You can even adjust the brightness on each display from dim-med-bright. HOWEVER- when you attempt to adjust the brightness on the 'slave' unit, it displays that this is "not available". And it seems to default the slave unit to 'dim'. BUT- if you take it out of slave mode, set the brightness and then put it back in slave mode it will keep your brightness setting. Not fatal, but one wonders why they did that.....

The headrest straps route through 2 metal pins embedded in the rear of each display. You run the strap through these, around your headrest (raised a couple of inches so the strap makes contact with the metal rods that support the headrest), and then clasped together. The mounting is very solid and you can tighten it so the display is held firmly against the seat.

The shipment came with:
2- players.
2- A/C adapters
1- Car adapter with 2 cables that come straight from the plug. Not a single cable that Y's off after several feet. Not sure I like this from a cable mess perspective.
1- slave video/audio cable
1- video cable
2- headrest straps

Thus far I am pleased. Now comes the longevity test.

UPDATED 6-6-2011- My 21 month old twins don't ride in the car well after about 30 minutes without nearly constant attention from the front seat passenger (Mom). Recently we had to travel an hour each way to an event and it was the quietest 2 hours on record for the twins. LOVE it so far for that.

I also love how it remembers where your place in the program and starts back at that spot. Also, it auto-replays so when you reach the end of the DVD, it starts over. With no remote control and no way to see the controls from the front seat this is ideal.

I do wish I could downgrade my rating to 4 stars: buttons on the top of the unit would have been preferable to under the screen in the front (where they can be reached by toes). If you are not fluent with the position of the front panel keys, if you are in the front seat, you have to detach the unit so you can operate the buttons.
